Why is Sarah Palin keynoting the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers convention?

When I received an official-looking e-mail last week announcing that Sarah Palin would be the keynote speaker at the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America's convention in Las Vegas in April, I assumed it was a spoof—a lame attempt at humor by some underemployed, bien-pensant wine geek. Among oenophiles, there is surely no organization more reviled than the WSWA, which for years has fought efforts to liberalize interstate wine shipping laws. What are the chances that the belle of the Republican base would agree to be the feature attraction at a booze convention at Caesars Palace? But it turned out the e-mail was no joke. Palin will indeed be speaking to the WSWA, to which I can only say, acronym to acronym, WTF?

Why cheap Chianti is often better than the expensive stuff.

Chianti is Italy's most famous wine, and—given its operatic recent history—it is arguably the most Italian of Italian wines. Back in the 1960s and '70s, Chianti was synonymous with plonk; it was the cheap, insipid Tuscan wine that came in straw flasks (fiascos, as they were aptly known) and was typically found, on these shores, in pizza joints with checkered tablecloths and jukeboxes. This lowly image is completely outdated, but it persists in the minds of many consumers. Even more damaging for Chianti has been its long-standing identity crisis; the rules defining what constitutes an authentic Chianti have been in flux for decades. The encouraging news is that despite all these tribulations, there are some good Chiantis on the market, some of which offer excellent value. Chiantis have the added virtue of being superb food wines and are especially well-suited to the flavors of winter.

It's a great time to buy great Champagne, cheap.

Pity isn't necessarily the first emotion conjured by news that major Champagne houses are choking on unsold inventory. It was only a few years ago that many of these producers were implementing extortionate price hikes; thus, word that sales have slumped amid the hangover from the global financial crisis is more apt to elicit schadenfreude than sympathy. The Champagne industry is getting a well-deserved kick. In this case, however, comeuppance is a drink best consumed chilled and effervescent. Prices have been slashed for many Champagnes, and it is a buyer's market for the first time in a long time. Good deals can be had for nonvintage bubblies, but if you are feeling cautiously optimistic about the year ahead and are in the mood for a sensible splurge, there are also some excellent vintage Champagnes that can be purchased for tariffs that seem almost fair.

What to drink on Thanksgiving: Napa cabernet.

Cabernet sauvignon—and particularly the cabernet produced in California's Napa Valley—is the signature American wine. When a Napa cab, the 1973 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, beat out some leading French wines in the Judgment of Paris, it heralded the coming-of-age of American viticulture and gave the phrase Napa cabernet international cachet. Nowadays, however, that phrase is more apt to elicit snickers than praise; in the minds of many consumers, it has become synonymous with overwrought, overhyped, and overpriced wines. Indeed, scorning Napa cabernets is almost as fashionable as dumping on California chardonnays. Plenty of Napa cabs deserve the derision, but even as the valley suffers through a richly deserved reversal of fortune, there are still producers turning out honest, delicious wines that demonstrate why people got excited about the valley in the first place. And if you are currently in the market for something homegrown and fowl-friendly to drink on Thanksgiving, these attitude-free Napa cabs will make fine choices.

Who said there is no disputing taste? For many oenophiles, half the pleasure of wine is arguing about it. In recent years, the vinosphere has seen a contentious debate over what can be called, for lack of a less ponderous phrase, First Principles. What defines quality in a wine? How about authenticity? Is it ultimately more important for a wine to taste good or to taste true to its origins—to exhibit goût de terroir, as the French say? And if the end result is agreeable, does it matter how a wine was made? With much of the wine industry fixated on branding and marketing, and technology increasingly giving vintners the power to bend nature to their will, these questions have taken on added urgency, and the discussion of them has grown ever more acrimonious.
